October Is Fall Car Care Month

fall-driving-2

Basic auto care goes a long way toward improving the safety and dependability of a vehicle. Whether you do it yourself or visit a trusted professional technician. Here are 10 Fall Car Care Month maintenance procedures to help make sure your car is operating at its best before winter arrives.

Fall Car Care Month in October is the ideal time to give your car some extra attention before harsh winter weather sets in. Taking a little time for auto care now can help you avoid the headaches of a costly emergency breakdown later.
  1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.
  2. Check the hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear.
  3. Check the battery and replace if necessary. Make sure the connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free.
  4. Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change.
  5. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without delay.
  6. Check the engine to make sure it is delivering the best balance of power and fuel economy and producing the lowest level of emissions.
  7. Check the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and safety reasons, such as defrosting.
  8. Inspect the steering and suspension systemannually, including shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components.
  9. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.
  10. Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation.

Basic Auto Care Many Drivers Miss

BasicAutocAreMiss-716x1024.png

Fluids and lubricants rank among the most neglected items when it comes to basic auto care.

Community car care events held throughout the country found that the top-three fluids most likely to be low or contaminated are windshield washer fluid in 26 percent of inspected vehicles, followed by engine oil at 23 percent and coolant at 19 percent.

Windshield washer fluid keeps dirt and debris from collecting on a vehicle’s windshield, allowing the driver full visibility and making it an essential safety item. Windshield washer fluid should be checked monthly and drivers should use a fluid that is specially formulated for their climate.

Engine oil lubricates the moving parts of a vehicle’s engine, helping keep the engine clean and preventing wear and overheating. Neglecting to change a vehicle’s oil can lead to costly repairs, including replacement. Engine oil levels should be checked frequently and changed per the owner’s manual.

Have A Safe Haul

Your best bet for a safe haul is to use the right hitch and know how to attach it. Below is a quick guide to hitch systems and how they’re used.

Carry Or Distribute?
  • The most common hitches are weight-carrying and weight-distributing. Both are designed to slide into your vehicle’s towing receiver hitch – found on some trucks and SUVs.
  • Weight-carrying hitches simply carry all the hitch weight of the trailer. You drop the trailer on, lock it down and go. They’re mostly used with lightweight trailers, such as an ATV or tent trailer.
  • A weight-distributing hitch is a heavy-duty system that uses distribution bars to spread the load weight more evenly. These hitches increase stability when towing a heavier travel trailer.
Weight-distributing hitches utilize spring bars that help distribute the weight. They are typically matched by the hitch manufacturer to the amount of weight you plan to tow. Sway control devices can be added to help prevent trailers from swaying too much. Hitching up with one of these systems is a complex process. You should have a qualified RV center show you how. Fortunately, once you’ve got it down, it only takes a few minutes to hitch up.

Driving Toward The Future

Auto companies testing have driven technological innovation for more than 100 years. As technology evolves, so do the ways we manufacture. Today we’re able to produce far more vehicles every year while producing far less harmful results for our environment. Toyota is one of the manufacturers leading the way in faster, safer and greener production methods.

Here are five fascinating manufacturing methods currently being used:

One: Rapid Prototyping
With “rapid prototyping,” vehicle parts are designed with special computer programs that perfectly mold and shape each part. A physical model is made with special machines like 3-D printers so that each part is created to specification. Instead of taking weeks to design and make a part, it takes hours or days.

Two: Flexible Production Lines
Some factories can only produce one type of vehicle at a time. Plants with “flexible production lines” can switch from one model to another depending on demand. At the Toyota plant in Georgetown, Kentucky, the production line is able to intuitively switch between Camry and Avalon, increasing production of both.

Three: Turning To Technology
Though people are still needed to assemble, design and build automobiles, robots within manufacturing plants help move the process along by boosting safety, ergonomics and efficiency. They do this through very precise programming and calculations that allow them to be extremely exact.

Keeping Your Brakes In Check

It’s no fun worrying about brakes. And most of us don’t. We assume they’re working right and will do their job when called upon. But as with anything, brakes should be checked, maintained and considered so that you can be sure they’re always in working order.

Lucky for you, Toyota brakes are designed to let you know when they are in need of service. Here are four signs that your brakes might need to be serviced.

Brake Light
You know the brake warning light on the dashboard of your car? If it turns on, it could mean a lot of different things. The vehicle could be low on brake fluid or there could be a malfunction in the brake system.

Before you start to worry, check to make sure the parking brake is released. If the light turns off after it’s fully released, the system is operating normally. If not, you should stop the vehicle immediately and contact your Toyota dealer.

The Future of Cruise Control

A Look Into Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)

Don’t you hate when you’ve just set your cruise control on the highway, and then someone pulls in front of you, forcing you to adjust your speed? While cruise control helps give your foot a break, it doesn’t account for the ebb and flow of normal traffic. Seldom is there a road where you can let your cruise control take over for miles and miles on end.

This is the type of situation when Toyota’s available Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) [1] -- can give you a little less to do and a lot less to worry about.

How The Technology Works

DRCC automatically adjusts your Toyota’s speed in order to help maintain a safe following distance. It’s not magic. It works by using forward-sensing radar technology installed behind the grille of your Toyota. The radar detects the speed and distance of the vehicle ahead of you and adjusts speed accordingly.

Making the Grade: 2017 4Runner TRD Off-Road Joins TRD Line-Up

Adding to its impressive off-road credibility, the 2017 4Runner will be available in two new grades -- TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium. Both grades offer distinctive TRD (Toyota Racing Development) branding to stand out anywhere a 4Runner can travel.

Since its introduction in 1984, the 4Runner’s body-on-frame architecture has enabled the SUV to traverse challenging terrain while comfortably transporting people and all the gear they need for their adventures.

For four decades, TRD has been racing off-road and that heritage is reflected in these new grades. The exterior of the TRD Off-Road 4Runner features black painted wheels and a unique TRD Off-Road badge on the C-pillar. Inside, a TRD Shift Knob sits below the center console that has a carbon fiber look, while the floor mats feature the TRD Off-Road designation. The TRD Off-Road Premium 4Runner also adds “TRD” red lettering on the headrests for the driver and front passenger.
